WEEK 6

Correspondence with Darren Marsh (e-Learning team, CLAD) re: submissions form via Canvas.  This was proving difficult to produce, as multiple submissions negated previously submitted data.  Can this be done?
  • "In theory yes – if you allow multiple attempts then you can see the history of attempts when viewing quiz statistics from the ‘count all attempts’ button. Depending on the choice of question types used, the statistics charts might look a bit odd but if you click around it should expand questions where multiple responses have been given. However, in the download options only seem to retain the last submission, so getting all of the data out in one go might not be possible."

A work-around solution was reached using a third-party web-editor (see here for the form).  This has the advantage of being able to forward submissions straight to a dedicated account, as well as storing them remotely.

  • Accessibility: NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FROM BEGINNING - some front-line lib staff might be available for transcription
  • Find out more about JAWS reading software
  • Check Lib intranet for existing materials.  What will migrate to ASG?  What are the criteria for migration?  (ASG materials should have a didactic element, learning aims and objectives, whereas lib intranet is informational)
  • Amailia (sp?) can help with student user feedback/focus groups etc.
  • Explore Libguides as fourth option for hosting ASG?
  • Paula has Libguides login & password (JH to forward)
  • Helen Barrel (Barber Inst) v. useful re: html & web design (Under Jean) - although this isn't in her job remit, so approach informally!

ASG content subgroup meeting (Alex Fenlon & Catherine Robertson)

Contensis Training (Internal)
Booked for Monday 23/06/2014: Strathcona G06, 10.00am - 12.00pm

Meeting with Amanda Lawrance (E-Resources and Serials)
  • Are we promoting reading lists?
  • Promotion of other resources i.e. Library News, Twitter feed and other embedded social tools
  • Can we have chat facilities, perhaps by subject or school to discuss resources, workshops etc.?
  • FAQ/chat/questions tool
  • What do students want?  AL involved in survey (over the summer?) asking this of students - GET THOSE RESULTS and think about planning further surveys based upon findings
  • Amanda, Andy Dodds and Catherin Robertson members of the marketing group - GET SOME ANSWERS RE: BRANDING

Meeting with Alex Fenlon (LS Copyright)
New legislation means that many more items may be used for illustration for instructional purposes.

  • Must be proportionate - i.e. don't use the majority of something
  • Must not prevent a commercial sale
  • Citations go on the file themselves, or on the page (e.g. Canvas) where featured
  • Cutting and pasting is now okay
  • Presentations must show how they are either criticism & review and/or being used for instructional purposes e.g. include a question or directive

Meeting with Martin Sullivan (AS Web Team)
Three viable options for hosting the Portal front-page

1. On the front-end public-facing website

PROS
  • Very public - acts as a good marketing tool
CONS
  • VERY difficult to get permissions
  • Slow to get things moving
  • Staffing might be an issue (maintenance)
  • Slow editing process
  • Anything geared towards students is discouraged and guided towards the Intranet

2. A page on the Intranet

PROS
  • Still public-facing, but is more overtly aimed at students
  • Easily edited by LS web editors
  • Shortly undergoing a revamp that will allow pages to be tailored to the needs of the dept i.e. colours, layout (?) etc.
  • May be able to link to publicly facing content (Articulate Storyline?) and internal Canvas/Libguides pages with ease
  • Relatively little external permissions required or red tape to plough through compared to other options
  • Can be implemented quickly so we can populate and test functionality early
  • May be used as an example to to build a case for one of the other options down the line
CONS
  • Until we get access to the new intranet editing tools, we're stuck with green and beige

3. A 'Generic' UoB webpage e.g. Careers Network Internships pages

PROS
  • Bespoke look
  • Clean and functional
  • Doesn't look like standard Intranet page
CONS
  • Requires specialists to set up and edit
  • Requires approval from Web Action Group (?)
  • Much red-tape in setup

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER
  • Accessibility: transcripts required for all public video content
  • Future maintenance of the ASG portal
  • How often/when will the ASG be updated - will it remain a static feed to other, changeable pages?
  • How are we tracking stats and usage, visits: internal or external, interactions and pageviews? (Ask at visits to other Unis?)

JISC Netskills course: Intro to Instructional Design

  • Began at 9.30am, but was abandoned at 11.30am when the discovery of suspicious packages meant JISC's Newcastle Universiy offices had to be evacuated
  • New date to be set
  • Contact:  Phil Swinhoe
    Training & Admin Coordinator
    www.netskills.ac.uk
    0191 208 5000
    [email protected]
  • Links added to Instructional Design page

Meeting with Ellen Shobrook (Careers Network/PSA)

  • Get a group together - me, Ellen, Marcus Belben, maybe some members of the MDS and CLAD e-learning teams - to make a case for the use of an expanded range of external software, e.g. Articulate Storyline and gaining further permissions to use other formats than Contensis for sites
  • ES to email all materials from JISC BTEC e-learning essentials course
  • Share good practice/updates/lessons learnt via new group of e-learning people around campus

Meeting with Rob Jones and Darren Marsh (CLAD E-learning team)

To do
  1. Contact Paul Edwards (COS?) about template course design
  2. Create template for LS Canvas courses
  • Nominate 'champions' from each team
  • Meet with champions and content group to talk about template - what goes in etc.
  • Produce template example
  • Get champions to review and comment
  • Show to RJ, DM and PE - any help?
  • Consider icon sets
  • Consider branding
